Telling Tales 034 – Kieran Apter

Our next instalment of the Telling Tales series is from Kieran Apter, co-founder and resident of Edinburgh house and techno night Tweak_. Kieran is an exciting up-and-coming producer and regarded as one of Edinburgh’s best selectors, playing alongside the likes of Tale Of Us, Mano Le Tough and Lee Burridge. Telling Tales 033 – Amentia

Our first Telling Tales of 2017 is also an opportunity to welcome new Chapter 24 artists Amentia, whose Prince Des Marais EP will be the label’s first release of the year. The talented duo have put together a mix full of organic grooves and a fusion of styles, with a heavily musical first half giving way to a more hypnotic ending.

In their own words, “we recently went for a lonely wander in a tropical forest and would have liked to have listened to this mix as we walked.”

Masaya – Flow of Tears {Ripperton Edition} *Out Now on Vinyl*

Bandcamp: bit.ly/CH024Bandcamp
Phonica: bit.ly/CH024Phonica
deejay.de: bit.ly/CH024deejay

As the winter solstice approaches and the fool’s journey comes to a close, Chapter 24 marks its first two years of releases with a 24th EP. This symbolic offering is a vinyl-only package from Masaya, with an Edition by her close friend and frequent b2b DJ partner Ripperton.

Masaya’s entire life is music and this really shines through across the four cuts served up by the Swiss-Chilean artist. As boss of her own label Mina Records, she is a real underground star who has been responsible for numerous great releases over the last ten years.

‘Borderline’ kicks things off and is nine minutes of spine-tingling deep house music with haunting vocals and wispy autumnal synths. Subtle and seductive, it is a killer opener to the EP. ‘Picture’ is then just as emotive and spiritual, with tender string sweeps and rolling rubbery beats mixed in with warm finger clicks to make for a hugely atmospheric house groove. The final original is ‘Flow of Tears’, which is again cavernous and deep, its sombre chords draped over gentle drums with whispered vocals that really mark it out as an evocative listen.

Ripperton is the long time deep house star from Switzerland who runs his own Tamed Musiq and has a fine discography, releasing on the likes of Innervisions, Maeve and more. His version of ‘Flow of Tears’ captures the sound of futuristic house and techno in 2016. It is more direct and driven, with corrugated drums and loose limbed percussion lulling you into his autumnal groove.

This is a fantastic EP from some of Switzerland’s finest, a fitting 24th Chapter offering four stories in sound.

Early support from the likes of Laurent Garnier, Âme, Skream, Noir, Petar Dundov, Adriatique, Patrice Bäumel, NHAR and many more.

Nhar – Navigli *Out Now*

Why do we tell stories?

We breathe, we eat, we sleep. We seek connection. These are our basic human needs.

But there is one more need we all share, and it centres on stories. All across the world, stories are being recounted everywhere, in every imaginable way, at any given time. For telling stories is at the very essence of what it is to be human.

The universe of stories can be broken down into seven basic plots which underlie all stories ever told. Recognising these patterns is the gateway to unravelling the universal symbolic language from which all storytelling is spun.

With The Quest, Chapter 24 returns with seven stories in sound collected from artists across the world to bring these themes to life.

NHAR (My Favorite Robot, Correspondant) is a consummate storyteller, and he opens the book with the glistening space tech of ‘Navigli’. This is quickly followed up by newcomer Dan Grassler, whose superb ‘Going Back’ with US vocalist KnowKontrol is powerfully brooding and promises great things for the Munich-based producer.

The momentum picks up further with the standout ‘Over My Head’, a dark and delicious cut from two returning Chapter 24 artists, Alex Zed and Billie Fountain.

The label welcomes Teho and Machino for their inaugural releases on the imprint. Frenchman Teho (Herzblut, Parquet) serves up a double helping of delight with the skilfully crafted ‘Back To The Forest’ and the tense tech house of ‘Drunken Leads’. Meanwhile, Machino (Desert Hearts), one of a new wave of Tijuana-based producers, showcases his unique blend of potent techno and ambient influences on ‘Perdidos’.

Finally, Melodule and Van Did bring the tales to a close with ‘Téou 12’, a dreamy, abstract piece that showcases wonky basslines, drifting pads and engaging sound design.

They say that there are only seven basic plots but a thousand different stories.

And so, as the storyteller utters that age old, magical phrase “Once upon a time…”, let yourself be carried away…

Released on Friday 16th September.

Early support from the likes of Joris Voorn, Nicole Moudaber, Edu Imbernon, Robert Babicz, Guy J, DJ T, Betoko, Denis A, Above & Beyond, Nick Warren, D-Nox, Alexi Delano, ANNA, Cristoph, Silicone Soul, Darin Epsilon, Cid Inc, Chris Fortier, David Granha, Anthony Pappa, Third Son, Olivier Weiter, Soul Button, Marc Poppcke, Franz Alice Stern, Jonas Saalbach, Baikal, Gai Barone, Elias Tzikas, Lonya, Tim Engelhardt and many more!

Kurt Baggaley – Winterland {Petar Dundov Edition} *Out Now*

Bandcamp: bit.ly/CH012BC
Beatport: btprt.dj/22T4K8n
iTunes: apple.co/1pnAC7G
VINYL: bit.ly/CH012_Vinyl

Support from the likes of Âme, Solomun, Pete Tong, Sasha, Hernan Cattaneo, Robert Babicz, Edu Imbernon, Kollektiv Turmstrasse, Guy J, H.O.S.H, Danny Daze, Cristoph, Nicolas Masseyeff, Gel Abril, D-Nox, Musumeci/Human Machine, DJ Hell, Agents Of Time, Eelke Kleijn, Oliver Schories, Einmusik, Atapy, Soul Button and many more!

As the waning of the final winter moon came to an end, Chapter 24 entered the world of wax with its first 12-inch release. For this next story in sound, now released in digital format for the first time, we welcome back Kurt Baggaley (@scape-one), whose wonderful ‘Winterland’ also receives the attentions of Patlac (@patlac) and Petar Dundov (@petardundov) with two immaculate Editions.

The EP has been in the hands of a chosen few since last summer, and has already been played by Âme, Solomun and H.O.S.H. at some of the world’s biggest festivals. Although initially released on vinyl only, the Patlac Edition was the number one most charted track on Resident Advisor in February, picking up Pete Tong support along the way.

An artist who lives and breathes electronic music culture, Kurt Baggaley has evolved his productions into a unique and personal sound since his early days as the Electro artist Scape One. Taking in influences from early 80’s Chicago House, Detroit Techno and New York Club, with a fusion of Italo Disco, Euro Synth and Electro, his huge Former Self EP on SoHaSo in Spring 2015 was met with widespread acclaim on both digital and physical formats. Supported by the likes of Michael Mayer and Dixon, it was followed up with his debut release on Chapter 24 a few months later, opening the book with his Spiral EP.

The final Edition on the package is a fitting one, from Croatian maestro Petar Dundov, who occupies the flip side. Dundov makes intelligent electronic music that breaks boundaries. His breathtaking take on the original embodies this ethos, hitting home with body twisting beats while also challenging the mind with complex melodies and slow-burning, hypnotic progressions. In his masterful hands, the track takes on life of its own, forever evolving and expanding and increasing in intensity.

With the Winterland EP, Chapter 24 turns the page on its first volume of releases, closing the Aesop’s Fables artwork series with a stunning linocut portrayal of ‘The Wolf and the Crane’ from in-house artist Simon Vaeth. The lessons from Aesop will make way for those of the Tarot, as the Book of Changes continues to shine a light on the wintry path ahead.
